Riddle #9: 53 Bicycles

Here's another one:

A man was lying dead, surrounded by 53 bicycles. Why was he murdered?

If you haven't heard this one before, feel free to make a guess by leaving a comment. You may also ask me "yes" or "no" questions in the comment section.

NOTE: The correct answer has been guessed. See the comments section for the answer. But I'll keep my clues up anyway, just for fun. Here they are:

Obviously these were not ordinary bicycles. And (you probably already knew this) the number is significant.

  3. I'm not reading the other comments (I'm typing with my left eye closed). I just had to tell you I love the riddles. I'm terrible at them, but I think they are fun. I'm sending my oldest ds here tomorrow am. Hopefully he'll have better success than I. :)

  5. Ha! I'm not convinced that easily to give up my secrets. I tell you what -- since this one is harder, I'll add some clues to the post itself, Then you will have to ask some "yes" or "no" questions to figure it out.

  6. I didn't answer because I've gotten so many others right before. The bicycles must be playing cards. But since there are 53 of them instead of 52, he must have had an ace up his sleeve or something, and so was killed by someone else at the table, whom he was cheating.

  7. Yes, Gigi Lynn, you're correct! You really have a gift for riddles. I've really stumped people with this one. I guess some people forget about the Bicycle brand of playing cards.

Have you made up any riddles yourself?

  8. No, I can't make up riddles. Nor can I tell jokes! But yeah, I'm good with figuring out word puzzles, seeing things alternate ways. I used to read riddle books like crazy growing up, and my father and brother were always trying to stump me.

  11. Andria,

Yes, that's right. He cheated at cards. I suppose the card could be an extra joker or an "ace up his sleeve" or something else. The key is that there are 53 and everyone knows that is not the correct number.
