Riddle #47: Shoe Shops

Here's the latest riddle:

In a small town there are four shoe shops of about the same size, each carrying pretty much the same line in shoes. Each shop is open the same hours. Each shop displays only one of each kind of shoe (not pairs) and keeps all the pairs of shoes in the back room. Yet one shop loses three times as many shoes to theft as each of the other shops. Why?

NOTE: The correct answer has been guessed. To read it, see the comments section.

  1. Josiah says that in Encyclopedia Brown one time , a robber stole a whole store of mismatched shoes with the hope that he would get a match.

Eric thinks that the other three stores show the left shoe and this one shows the right. (Carri agrees, but she didn't think of it first. He's the brains of the outfit.)

  2. Eric is right again! Since one shoe store displays only right shoes, the thieves take the right shoe from that shoe shop. But when they need the left shoe to match, they have three shoe shops to choose from, since the other three display only left shoes. Good job! (And I thought this one would be difficult.)
