Handy Chart for Following the Major Sled Dog Races in Alaska

It's not just about the Iditarod. Sled dog races occur nearly every weekend from December through early April in Alaska. I've created a chart to keep track of the major races. Feel free to print out the chart and use it to record the winners of the major races, such as the Kuskokwim 300, the Copper Basin 300, the Kobuk 440, the Yukon Quest, and of course, the Iditarod.

For more about the races, read my article, Alaska Sled Dog Races: Sprint, Mid-Distance & Long-Distance Races.

  1. Nice chart, but it's not just about the winner. I realize that maybe putting in just the winner is more convenient, but it rubs me the wrong way. I guess that's the way other sports are. A chart that only shows who comes in first doesn't convey what dog mushing is really about.

  2. Tamra, that's a good point, and I totally agree with you. I think the chart is partly just to keep track of when the next race is, because it's so easy to forget or to lose track of time. The thing about dog mushing is that it's hard to put it all on a chart. That's what I like about it, but it's hard to summarize the many stories that go along with a race, especially if you want it on one sheet. Maybe next year I'll come up with another idea. Do you have any suggestions?

  3. Cool, Marcia. Thanks for the chart! Hey, I thought of you when we visited Martin Buser's kennel in September. I remembered your post about meeting him and I finally got to meet him, too. Since it was at the end of the season, we were the only one's who showed up for the tour that day. We got a private tour and it was so fun. You can read about it and see photos on my blog. Hope you had a joyous Christmas. Blessings in the New Year.

  4. I'm so jealous that you're going to the Iditarod in 2013! I wanted to go this year (2011) but it just didn't work out. Yes, I think visiting Alaska in the summer is a must-do. You could do a kennel tour: Martin in Big Lake, Mitch in Seward, Jeff in Denali, and also hit Iditarod HQ in Wasilla (where you can meet Raymie Reddington like we got to do in '09). Do you think Lance can make it 5 consecutive wins this year?

  5. Sounds like a blast. If I can save up enough money, and work up enough courage, I'll try the trip. It's still not for sure if I'm going to the Iditarod in 2013, but that is the plan. An on-line friend will be racing it that year, so it's the year to go.
