Two Favorite October Poems
I love October. There's something about it that makes people want to write poetry. Two of my favorite poems are about October. I've combined these two autumn poems with some original photos, most of which were taken in my own neighborhood. (These poems are both old enough to be in the public domain, so there is no copyright infringement.)
A Vagabond Song
by Bliss Carman
There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood—
Touch of manner, hint of mood;
And my heart is like a rhyme,
With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time.
The scarlet of the maples can shake me like a cry
Of bugles going by.
And my lonely spirit thrills
To see the frosty asters like a smoke upon the hills.
There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir;
We must rise and follow her,
When from every hill of flame
She calls and calls each vagabond by name.
October
by Robert Frost
O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
To-morrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
To-morrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow,
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know;
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away;
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,
Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost—
For the grapes’ sake along the wall.

Your photos are wonderful! Nebraska is so pretty in the fall. It is still greenish-brown around here (due to the drought)
ReplyDeleteand the poetry is lovely!
Thank you. I'm so glad you like the photos and the poetry. I wish I had some fall poetry to share, but most of the time I only get inspired to write poems about sled dog racing. Yes, Nebraska can be very beautiful. Sorry to hear about the drought.
