I thought I'd add some fun quizzes from time to time. The first one deals with things I'm obsessed about that most people aren't familiar with. See how well you do. Hey, it's multiple choice, so you at least have a chance. No peeking in the comments section! Take the quiz first, write down your answers, and check the comments section for the real answers (and a few explanations).
Then share a comment and tell us how you did!
Good luck!

Here are the answers:
ReplyDelete1. What is presented to the last musher to finish the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race?
C. The Red Lantern Award
(A red lantern is hung over the famed "burled arch" at the finish line, and is taken down and presented to the last musher to finish.)
2. What was the name of the first baby born on Pitcairn Island?
B. Thursday October Christian
(Pitcairn Island was settled by the mutineers from the Bounty. Thursday October was so named because he was born on a Thursday in October, and his father didn't want to name him something that reminded him of England. Later it was discovered that they had failed to take into account the international date line, so he was actually born on a Friday, but the name change never stuck)
3. What bird do Icelandic children gather in bags at night and then release on the beach in the morning?
D. Puffins
(The baby birds get confused by the lights of the town and fly there at night instead of out to sea. The children rescue the birds and release them by the sea)
4. Which is NOT the name of an Irish dance?
C. Winds of Clare
(But it sounds like it could be.)
5. What are the Geminids?
D. A meteor shower
(The only one we usually manage to see.)
6. Which one of the following trees has palmately compound leaves?
A. Ohio buckeye
(See my Tree ID guide for more info.)
7. What cough drop has a "mystery cougher" who gives money to people who offer him/her that brand of cough drop?
B. Ricola
(And I'm still hoping to spot this person.)
8. What do you call your first cousin's grandson?
A. First cousin twice removed
(Don't ask me why I know this.)
9. What animal did Bartolomew Perestrello bring to Porto Santo, which caused problems for the settlers?
A. Rabbit
(It was a pregnant rabbit, and the baby bunnies multiplied and ate all the crops.)
10. What do geocachers call non-geocachers who might observe them?
D. Muggles
(Hopefully they don't steal the cache.)
